Two 21-year-old NIFT Students, Sindhuja K from Hyderabad and Praween KR from Bihar, founded a fashion brand Young Trendz (Selling T-Shirts) to meet the needs of fashion-loving generation. Their startup brand, within 5 days, sold up to 25000 units during Flipkart’s festive sale in 2017.

The duo was students when the idea of entrepreneurship strikes. In the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Chennai, they were studying in the knitwear design course in seventh semester when they got an idea to start their own business on their own.

When ecommerce industry was booming in 2015, the duo made decision to be the part of the crowd and started Young Trendz, their official online clothing brand by investing Rs. 10 Lakh in September. They started selling on Amazon, Flipkart, PayTm Mall and Voonik and other online marketplaces in two months and introduced their own ecommerce portal.

They have seen very fast growth. They started offering freebies and customized T-shirts in college fests before their semester, under the brand of Young Trendz.

Sindhuja added, “In the beginning, we were taking just 10 orders per day. We collaborated with up to 100 colleges across India, along with IIMs and IITs and started offering T-shirts.

Eventually, the startup started selling 1000 units per day and became Rs. 20 Cr. worth of brand with 0 VC financing.

With the growth of Young Trendz, seamless development of their product line was their focus which was possible only in Tirupur, which is the leading knitwear manufacturing destination in the country. The duo visited Tirupur for college projects with a confidence that they could manufacture and provide quality products. But they had language problems initially as they both were not from Tamil origin. However, their shift was beneficial for them when it comes to source raw material and product development.

Praween added, “We got the right workforce with best knowledge and skills in garment industry in Tirupur which was important for product development and got talented and highly skilled IT professionals for online operations from Coimbatore.” Shipments could be picked up by the courier services tied with the ecommerce sites. So, there was no problem in transportation.

Young Trendz has been established, as the name suggests, with a focus on trending designs for 20-somethings, as their products have cool graphics and designs that youth can relate. Sindhuja added, “We always keep an eye on what’s trending in daily life and on social media for graphic inspiration. We have over 1.5 lakh products in competition to stay on the first page on online stores, including both domestic and international brands. So, there is no lack of tough competition.

Now, Young Trendz has warehouses in Karnataka, Telangana, Maharashtra, Haryana, and Tamil Nadu with over 30 people in a team. They are looking forward to open one more in West Bengal.

According to Sindhuja, these warehouses will help us to serve our customers across India. After West Bengal and other north-eastern states, they get most demand of clothing from Delhi and over 90% of shipments have been delivered before the given date.

Young Trendz was the first brand which has brought the concept of couple clothing, a well-known trend, to India all the way from Korea and China. They sold limited stocks as a trial in 2016 during Valentine’s Day season. They got great requests and response from the buyers. So they get 20% of sales of couple clothing. According to Sindhuja, quick delivery and implementing global trends are their USP. Currently, there are three designers working for Young Trendz and the brand also outsources ad campaign shoots and photo shoots.

According to Sindhuja, the brand offers unmatched quality with affordable price ranging from just Rs. 250 to Rs. 600 for college goers. They have over 3500 products to attract huge audience base in all online markets, which helps them garner over 70% of revenue. Vallari Chandrakar belongs to Sari village, Bagbahara, Chhattisgarh. In 2012, she completed her M.Tech in Computer Science and started as assistant professor. The 0.89 million citizens of the city have employed over 1.37 sweepers per km. They are responsible to manage 410 tons (27 trucks), which is more solid waste than that of Chandigarh.

According to a research published by Jamia Millia Islamia University, New Delhi, in 2016, increasing urbanization, rising consumption and wealth might cause 5-fold hike in the amount of urban solid waste by 2051.

For India, it is a giant crisis to face in the near future. But civic authorities in Mysuru have got truly a viable solution with a bit of technology and presence of mind. Even better, it makes millions of rupees. Mysuru hasn’t became India’s cleanest city overnight. It already had 3 R’s – Reduce, Refuse, and Recycle. Now they have Reuse, another R. It conducts door-to-door collection of garbage and the way it manages the waste is totally incredible.

How They Make Money with Waste?

Mysuru residents have two types of dustbins in their homes, i.e. one for compost, while another for non-compost. Sanitary works whistle every morning for garbage collection. They load 170 auto-trippers and 400 push carts for recycling centers, a compost plant, 47 centers for dry waste collection, and 9 recycling centers. The trash is separated at the centers with reusable items like metal, footwear, bottles, and plastic cups that scrap dealers purchase. They make compost of the rest and send to farmers. They have a workable model to turn wet waste into compost in waste processing centers.

200 Tons of Compost Processed every day

Rs. 6 Lakh goes to Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) as royalty from an organization which manages city’s biggest compost plant, ILFS and processing centers sell dry waste and make Rs. 24,000 per month, according to CG Betsurmath, former MCC Commissioner.

Mysuru segregated 80% of its trash before processing and achieved 100% door-to-door collections. Mysuru has become an ideal city of India. It has huge network of drains of 1586 km and its public toilets are 98% poster-free and fully functional. It also avoids open defecation thanks to Swachh Bharat. In addition, people are also aware and do their best to keep their city clean.

Under a slum rehabilitation programme, total 6000 toilets were built in the city. It is the best way to deal with the issue of open defecation. Here, radio shows are not all about comedy and songs. They also run campaigns, such as morning radio jingles. In addition, pamphlets, street plays and WhatsApp messages helped a lot.

Mysuru produces up to 402 tons of waste every day. Around half of this waste is processed at compost plant and quarter of it is treated by garbage centers, according to Bloomberg.

Mysuru’s history of cleanliness is not new. Along with lavish palaces, its rulers also had a masterplan by 1903. Underground drainage was built in 1910 and street lighting in 1908.

Neeta Lulla is a fashion stylist and costume designer who has been a leading fashion designer since 1985 and has served in up to 300 Bollywood films. She has been associated with several A-listers like veteran actresses Madhuri Dixit and Aishwarya Rai as she designed their costumes for Devdas (2002), a Bollywood film which had set a unique fashion trend in India. Her first major client was Varuna Jani, a jewellery designer. She has focused completely to clients’ base from Bollywood industry. She also designed costume for Sapna, a prominent actress in South India. Then, she also designed for Sridevi and Salma Agha.

To be clear, Neeta is a workaholic who doesn’t listen to anyone. She started from scratch and now rules the skies on her own. She has become an iconic name in fashion world and adorned hundreds of movies and got international fame. But her story is truly breathtaking and inspiring just like her designs.

She was born in a middle class family in Hyderabad. Her father was a businessman and her childhood was happy. Every month, her family used to visit Mumbai several times. She passed her 10th standard with just 48% and she was not a bright student.

Her family had belief that girls are not meant to work outside. She also didn’t have any career ambition and enjoying life and having fun with friends. In 1981, she was sent to Mumbai to live at relative’s home to continue her college studies. It was when a major twist was awaiting her.

Not many fans know that she got married to a psychiatrist when she was 16 and her husband was 11 years older to her. Just to avoid further studies, she married to him. But her plan didn’t work as her in-laws also forced her to study and make career. Now, she had just two options – either to start tailoring or cooking. So, she developed a lot of interest in fashion and styling. She got her bi-monthly fashion magazines when she was at young age from her father. So, she made decision to enroll a course of garment manufacturing and pattern making in SNDT, Mumbai. She chuckles, “I would have never got married if I knew that I would have to study further.

Today, she is in very secure environment. She had a driver who used to drop her to college. She used to bunk classes once driver leaves and she goes to theatres. Her teacher warned her to tell her husband for her careless approach as she got bad result in first semester.

So, she ended up sitting in the classrooms. She started giving good performance as her observation skills had been improved. Her faculty members gave significant response for her unique clothing design. She got a suggestion to do PhD after topping the university, but she refused.

When She Got Her Passion?

She was a huge movie buff. So obviously, she has always wanted to work in Bollywood and it excited her a lot. There was an era when Bollywood stars’ families used to bring costume designs to movies. She got her first project as a Bollywood fashion designer in 1987 for Tamacha. She added, “I loved my work as it was creative and I used to work up to 22 hours a day those days.

But the first outfit was a disaster she had designed. She knew that she needed to work better and harder. But she was unable to get any more chance. She needed more tailors and machines for that technique. But she was out of money and it was not possible for her.

Arranging for Money

Her husband told her to buy anything she need and she didn’t need lakhs. But she decided to become independent. She had integrity to do something more than ordinary. She started selling her homemade egg sandwiches to children. Definitely it took much time to arrange money herself. But she decided to stick to ethics. This is how a legend was born.

She added that she cannot work in specific parameters, excluding films. She always wants to do something different. She hates boredom. She started to collect money by making egg sandwiches and had enough savings to get the first sewing machine from her income. She started with just one tailor with Rs. 500. Gradually, she increased the numbers.

Her Growth

Initially, she faced a lot of struggle in life but her hard work paid off. She never faced a low point when she started from scratch. She never looked back once she started getting projects. She rose to prominence when she designed for Sridevi. Then, she started earning fame with big banner projects like Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Jodha Akbar, Mohenjo Daro, Devdas, and others. She even worked for Hollywood films like Mistress of Spices, One Night with the King, Provoked, and Bride & Prejudice.

Neeta Lulla is a fashion designer who used to sell sandwiches so she could collect funds for her first sewing machine and to hire a tailor. Today, she leads the staff of 250 employees. She worked in more than 300 films and is the winner of four National Awards. Hence, she is the only designer who rose to such prominence. Working without thinking of time, hours of brainstorming, and giving priority to work over anything else literally paid her off and made her an iconic figure from an ordinary woman.
